In addition to the stated curriculum, at Buranda State School we also offer the following:
Philosophy
Philosophy has been taught to all of our students since early 1997. All children participate in one hour a week of philosophical discussions, concept development activities, and activities designed to improve their reasoning and inquiry skills. These lessons are taken by the classroom teachers, all of whom have undertaken training in this field.
Environmental education
Each class at Buranda participates in regular environmental education lessons. The school has an extensive garden. The students learn about environmental sustainability, care for chickens and grow vegetables.
Environmental education classes are undertaken weekly, and teachers are assisted by a teacher with expertise and passion in environmental education. This activity is funded by the Parents and Citizens’ association.
Mixed ages
Our classes are composed of children of different ages, intentionally grouped for learning.
